These communities have traditionally been dominated by vast ranch and equestrian horse land, but this has changed in recent years as new residential communities have been developed due to great schools and beautiful Hill Country scenery. Today, this area is one of the top wedding venues in Texas, as well as home to Tito’s Vodka, Dripping Springs Volda and other breweries and distilleries. This is an affordable and scenic area with great schools.

The countryside surrounding South Austin communities is full of charming scenery and abundant wildlife. The area is also one of the best spots in Texas Hill Country for birdwatching. This idyllic rural community is just a 30 minutes’ drive from Downtown Austin.

South Austin is brimming with places to eat and things to do. In Dripping Springs, the city’s vibrant downtown area runs alongside the highway with a great mix of local businesses. Mazama Coffee Co and Rolling in Thyme & Dough both serve fresh-roasted coffee alongside tasty pastries, sandwiches, and sweet treats. Mazama also serves local beers while Rolling in Thyme & Dough hosts a weekly BYOB bistro night. Homespun Kitchen & Bar is a rustic farm-to-table eatery with a menu of American classics and European-influenced dishes. Elegant wine bar Epicure pairs cheese plates and bistro entrées with an eclectic array of imported wines. The Barbershop is a lively favorite for Texas craft beers and live music. Hudson’s on Mercer is a hotspot for live performances hosting regional and national touring acts as well as karaoke and songwriter nights. North of Highway 290 on Old Fitzhugh Road, Sidecar Tasting Room is an inviting Prohibition speakeasy-style spot where you can sample fine wines from the nearby Bell Springs Winery. Close to Dripping Springs Sports Park on the south side of the highway, Road Runners Kitchen & Spirits offers gourmet burgers and other Southern specialties alongside signature cocktails.

Things to Do

The beautiful rolling Texas Hill Country around South Austin is full of scenic recreation areas and breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Founders Memorial Park features football and soccer fields, a public pool, and playgrounds on the north side of Highway 290 in Dripping Springs, while Sports and Recreation Park on the south side of the highway also has a playground alongside basketball and sand volleyball courts. North of Dripping Springs’ city limits, Dripping Springs Ranch Park has six miles of trails running through a lush 130-acre natural landscape. One of the area’s top local wedding venues, this park also features equestrian facilities and livestock shows. These South Austin communities are also within easy reach of the gorgeous sprawling scenery of 5,212-acre Pedernales Falls State Park, the mesmerizing waterfall and scenic savannah trails at Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, the natural swimming hole and waterfall at Hamilton Pool Preserve, and the canyons, forests, mountain bike trails, and swimming beach at Milton Reimers Ranch Park. Distilleries, breweries, and wineries can be found in all directions. Highlights include handcrafted Texas wines and live music at Bell Springs Winery to the northwest, fine spirits at Dripping Springs Distilling along Highway 290 to the west, premium craft beer at Twisted X Brewing Company to the southwest, Ghost Note Brewing and Driftwood Estate Winery to the south, Desert Door Distillery and Fall Creek Vineyards to the southeast, Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room to the east, and Treaty Oaks Distilling and Revolution Spirits to the northeast.
