Central Austin’s’s 2ND Street District is home to many of Austin’s finest restaurants, trendiest boutiques, and most exciting live music venues. Spanning six city blocks, this vibrant stretch is full of life both day and night. Bar Chi is a chic Japanese eatery serving exquisite fresh sushi and maki rolls and rare sashimi items. Cru has been called the best wine bar in the world by the influential Moodie Davitt Report. Guests at Cru can enjoy cheese plates, stone-fired pizzas, and Sunday brunch specials alongside an impressive selection of wines. The James Beard Award-nominated La Condesa pairs creative contemporary Mexican cuisine with a huge variety of tequila. Lamberts offers exquisite Texas-style BBQ and a drinks menu of classic cocktails, local beers, and New World wines. Lamberts’ upstairs lounge frequently hosts live music performances. III Forks puts a modern twist on the traditional upscale steakhouse experience. Drawing on French culinary influences, enjoy III Forks’ sublime steaks and seafood alongside a thorough and thoughtful wine list. Trace is a hotspot for distinctively Texan fine dining with dishes prepared from locally-sourced ingredients. In a city well-known for its dynamic music scene, Austin City Limits at the Moody Theater is the central Austin area’s premier live performance venue. The adjacent 3TEN ACL Live is one of many more intimate venues throughout Downtown Austin used for smaller shows. On 5th Street, the Whole Foods headquarters and flagship store makes healthy, whole ingredients readily available to the community.
Austin City Limits takes place over two weekends in October just across the river from Downtown Austin in Zilker Park. This renowned music festival features eight stages showcasing a huge variety of top touring acts. Some of the major names who have headlined Austin City Limits in recent years include Paul McCartney, Metallica, Jay-Z, Travis Scott, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Drake, The Strokes, and Kendrick Lamar. In April, South by Southwest takes over Downtown Austin with a wide array of major events related to music, arts, technology, theater, and literature. Originally purely a music festival, South by Southwest has long been one of the biggest events for the music industry— SXSW showcases have led to acts such as John Mayer signing their first record deals. The event has expanded since it launched in the 1980s to include keynote speeches from major tech figures and presidential candidates alongside ten days of special film screenings and countless other associated events. The grand Texas State Capitol has been the centerpiece of Downtown Austin since the 1880s. This National Historic Landmark is open to the public Monday through Friday. A less well-known Austin landmark is the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, which spans Lady Bird Lake to downtown’s south. This bridge offers spectacular views of the Austin skyline as well as the unique sight of over a million bats taking to the skies at dusk between spring and fall. Shoal Beach Metro Park is a recreation area along downtown’s Lady Bird Lake shoreline featuring hiking and biking trails as well as launches for boating on the lake. Kayak, canoe, and pontoon boat rentals are also available at the park.
